What is hacking

Hacker has several meanings in the technical field. The word is used colloquially to refer to someone that penetrates through a network of computer systems and is also part of a corresponding subculture. In a narrower sense, since the 1950s, the expression is used regarding subcultures for self-designation.

The common feature is that a hacker has a wide range of technical experistise. In an overarching sense, hackers are experimental individuals who use their technology expertise of any kind outside of its normal purpose or ordinary usage. Within the subculture of computer parts, their intention is to identify and eliminate vulnerabilities, and write a positive response.

In the general public it is more often used for people who illegally bypass security barriers and exploit such vulnerabilities. A hacker does not have a deep knowledge base. Inside tabloid journalism and politics, both expressions are not usually distinguished.

A different meaning as a developer can be found in another subculture, which produces Free Software and Open Source to the public and has no direct relation to computer security. In its third use, the term refers to hobbyists, primarily in the field of information and communication technology, to comprehensively deal with hardware and software.

In hacker jargon, the scope of a hacker extends to any field of technology. As an example, a hacker can be in the field of astronomy. In the area of the computer hacker, they are a person who enjoys the creation and manipulation of computer software or hardware, and also has a keen sense of aesthetics, creativity and originality (”hack value”) and imaginative experimentation (”playful cleverness”).

In the field of software development, the concept depends on the context of praise, neutral to pejorative allusions within the hacker culture. In contrast, a hack is an amazingly simple, (sometimes) clever and elegant solution to a nontrivial problem.

They can also relate to the other, a rapidly prepared, inefficient, ugly and unpolished solution (quick and dirty hack), which is more akin to a temporary problem (kludge). In this latter context, hackers may have the negative connotation of a developer who is known for its unreliable solutions.

Developed in the field of hardware design or hardware changes, a hacker writes device drivers and firmware, or deals with the basic physics of networks, especially if it means things outside of the specification used. Hacking is generally understood as an overall culture of the creative management of technology of any kind, thus the term “hacker” is used.

In the field of computer security, the challenge of hacking is seen to overcome security mechanisms and to identify vulnerabilities thus able to infiltrate systems or, more accurately, by social engineering or to study by reverse engineering the design and programming errors, too.

Circumvention of security measures can access a computer network, a computer, a secured component (for example, receive a smart card) or access restricted data, of an otherwise protected function of a computer program.
