What is Bing

Bing is an Internet search engine from Microsoft, which has completely replaced the previous search engine Live Search. It came on stream in June 2009. Microsoft calls its search engine a “decision engine,” stressing Bing should “provide the user not only with the desired information more quickly, but also assist in daily decision-making about issues such as shopping or travel plans.”

The design is minimalist, but is provided with a daily changed background image such as picturesque holiday destinations at the seaside or in the mountains.

Bing has a similar map like Google to make its search in the categories of images, videos, news and maps. Under the item shopping there is integrated the portal ciao in Germany. Bing is currently only in the U.S version though it is fully usable in any other country versions, missing some features.

Background and strategy

Bing was released in June 2009. With Bing, Microsoft wants to attack in particular the market leader Google. Thus, the options are similar to those of the competition. On 29th July 2009 Microsoft announced that Yahoo will soon work with Bing. At the end of the first week after the start of operations, it was said that Bing had made third place in the Yahoo search engine ranking.
