Google

Google Inc. is the owner of the Google brand, whose main product is the search engine of the same name. It was founded on 4th September 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Stanford Ph.D. students in computer science from Stanford University).

While its main product is the Browser, the company also offers among other services: a price comparison called Google Product Search (formerly known as Froogle); a search Googleengine for material stored on local disks (Google Desktop Search); an e-mail service called Gmail; the Google Earth 3D world map and an instant messaging service based on Jabber/XMPP client called Google Talk.

Google is currently working on new projects like the $100 PC, 2 a new operating systems, 3 Google Docs & Spreadsheets and promoting open source applications like Firefox, installation of several free wireless networks and the development of a system open protocol communication among others. It is also speculated that they would be working on developing a “Google Office” and a global network.

Vint Cerf, considered one of the fathers of the Internet, was hired by Google in 2005. The company trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker GOOG. In October 2006, Google acquired for 1.650 billion dollars the famous video hub YouTube.

In April 2007, Google bought DoubleClick, a company specializing in Internet advertising for 3,100 million dollars. Earlier this month, Google became the world’s most valuable brand, reaching the sum of 66,000 million dollars, surpassing flagship companies like Microsoft, General Electric and Coca-Cola.

In July 2007, Google acquired Panoramio, a website dedicated to displaying the pictures that the users themselves created and geo-positioned, some of which are uploaded to the site so they can be viewed through Google Earth software, which aims to allow users of the software to learn more about a specific area of the map, looking at pictures that other users have taken there.
